UP joins world ofcommerce zestfully

By Rene Q. Bas, Editor in Chief

THE University of the Philippines has a new charter that proclaims it a national university just as the worlds top-ranking universities are. The new charter allows UP to be fiscally independent so that it can increase the salaries of its professors.

The new charter allows UP to enter the world of commerce and industry its professors, researchers and scholars to cohabit more zestfully with businessmen and industrialists. By so doing it can raise much more money than it has now, which should be very much more than the continuing subsidy that the government will and can afford to give it.

At the same time it mandates the UP system to continue being a citadel of academic freedom and intellectual rigor, the new charter places the UP more frankly in the commercial world. This circumstance is happily coupled with the presence as the UP president today, for the first time in its history, of a person from the business-administration segment of academe, Dr. Emerlinda Roman.

UP was arguably the pre-eminent English-language university in Asia for many years. But UP lost its pre-eminence when the National University of Singapore advanced to its present level in the late 80s.

With its new charter, which UPs young population of militants dont like very much, UP can advance and at least rise to the level of NUS and the Australian national universities.

Definitely a stroke of genius. UP should be leading the country's economic take off. But something is lost in the translation there from the academe into the real world. Letting the business and economics college take the helm of the university and lead the way may well bridge that gap.

And guys, stop complaining about the commercialization of the university. Better than being a burden to the government and society. And, hey, it's great to be rich. So get used to it!

I think it is laudable that UP professors encourage the kids to be politically involved. But instead of majoring in street protests, it may be more constructive if they learn practical skills. Instead of demos against corruption or incompetence in government, maybe they can set up and manage an abuse/achievement tracker on each government official or department.

There is also no consumer protection board in the country. Maybe the kids can set up one and manage. And the like. Its how many political and social movements/agencies/watchdogs in Europe started and some still continue to be run that way. Mainly by youth volunteers. That way, the kids learn managerial skills which are marketable, instead of street walking which anyone can do.

And there is always the option of doing volunteer work with the government. I did that when I was in college. And it opened a lot of doors for me after graduation.

The Catholic church problem is going to rearing its head more and more in the days to come, believe me. There is no organized youth group equivalent to the Free Masonry. UP students should start that. And let the girls join... in step with the times. Maybe do an oblation run in front of the CBCP HQ!!
