Jesus Christ, don't follow that hot water method - your natural nails will be damaged!
Acrylic nails must be soaked off in pure acetone - they should never be pulled, pried or picked off in any way. The best way to do this is to take 100% pure acetone, saturate (I mean saturate!) cotton balls, place on the nails and wrap each nail in a square of aluminum foil. Then sit for at least 30 minutes. Be patient! After 30 minutes, pull one of the packages off your nail and check the progress. Good quality acrylic should pretty much be melted off the nail at this point. It may take a bit longer if they are thicker.

Unfortunately if you went to a bad salon you may have illegal MMA acrylic on your nails and they would be gummy and not really very melted off the nail at this point. All you can do is take a coarse file, slough off the soft bits and then re-do the soaking. Keep going at it until they are off, being very careful with the coarse file the closer you get to your natural nail.

Properly applying and removing nails should NEVER be painful or damaging to the natural nail. If it is, you may want to rethink the salons you are frequenting.
