There has been a lot of JPEPA bashing: basurang Hapon, bad for Filipino businesses... The leftists are vigorously fighting its ratification.
But this is what I saw when I checked it out:
The projected foreign direct investment from Japan to the Philippines due to JPEPA is P365 billion, plus more than 200,000 jobs, (Benefits of JPEPA.) Also, black propaganda iyang sinasabi nilang basurang hapon. This is the article: Under JPEPA, No Hazardous Waste.
Would Filipino businessmen be pressing for its ratification if it were bad for them?
I am a businessman. I disagree with the leftist assertion that JPEPA will kill our industries. I find that personally insulting. It assumes that my abilities and skills are inferior to that of foreigners. Increased trade only helps businesses and the economy. That's why you have the Filipino chambers of commerce pushing for it. It also means more jobs for Filipinos. An uncompetitive, inefficient Filipino business will only become more so if it is be protected by the government. Like in the case of the U.S. auto industry. Also, such protection will be at the expense of everyone else.
Tayo ang unang nilapitan ng Japan, pero tayo pa rin ang nasa huli. Singapore signed up a long time ago and is suppose to renew it soon, ganoon na rin halos lahat ng ASEAN countries ngayon.
Also, it should buttress the economic fallout on our economy from the expected slowdown in the U.S. economy next year.
RP has to prepare for the possibility that America may go into recession next year. JPEPA with Japan should be prioritized and trade with China, EU and other countries increased, to buttress the effects of a US economic downturn on our economy.
