Ma'am, can we do something about the corruption, nepotism, favoritism,... and other unseemly behavior of government men. Kung puede lang, avoid situations that give the impression that you and your family are involved. I do not intend to be accusing or insulting you. But as president, the head of government, it is the example that you and your top men set that everyone else follows.
I don't like her kissing up to Padre Damaso. It makes her look weak and the Philippines a province of Rome.
She should tax the Catholic church, so there is more money for alleviating hunger and to fund other government programs. Even low income employees are required to pay taxes. Padre Damaso is among the richest of the rich in the country, just look at his estates, schools and his lifestyle. But the church has not been giving its proportionate share as a member of the community. That is immoral. As to church's social work, there is no public accounting for that.
Politicians should have more chutzpah. Padre Damaso ain't that big among Filipinos. We are all the children of Rizal, who despised him, Andres who plotted to kill them, and, hey, great-great grandpa liked jailing them. And they were all born Catholics.
That thing for Padre Damaso, it is only a rich thing. The rich and middle class do not even comprise 20% of the Filipino populace, and of that 20%, more than half question Padre Damaso's "moral authority" and interference in State affairs.
The poor only kiss up to him because of his largesse, not out of faith. He's just another version of the trapo - his influence comes from the free and cheap entertainment he provides, largesse and patronage. Without his money, Padre Damaso ain't much more than an emperor with no clothes on. So take his clothes off and tax him! Then, he won't be a problem in governance.
As to your everyman, rich and poor, we all pay taxes. So there is great resentment toward that exemption regardless of one's creed or politics... So do it!
Her legacy to education is appalling. Click here. Also, there's the regression in the medium of instruction in the schools back to English which she championed.
One thing really good she's done there though is to allow UP, which has considerable real estate assets and should have the talents easily available to tap, the freedom to handle their fiscal affairs and to require it to be self-sufficient, financially independent of the govt. That should keep our loud anti-everything professors busy I don't know how the other state colleges will do, however. Maybe UP can provide for all the other state colleges? And there's their throve of successful graduates they don't make any effort to tap. Maybe they can provide scholarships for the poor students. After all, werent many of them in that position once.
The legacy that Gloria will leave in education, as a result of Opus Dei meddling in the Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) and her acquiescence to them, is appalling. There will be NO Science subject in ALL public elementary school in Grades 1 and 2. Last year, the high school Science program was crippled by a 25 percent reduction, or a billion hours, in the study and teaching time of Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This mocks common sense and the Third International Math and Science Study of 1999, when the Philippines was third from the last in both Math and Science in the world.
Makabayan is really many subjects neatly hidden in one. They call this "decongestion." I call it intellectual dishonesty. There is history, yes, but also a "values education" component. Nostalgia for catechesis is shamelessly expressed. Gloria buys the twisted logic that we can learn more science by studying less of it-just to mollify the Catholic Church. As if daily Catholic Mass at the main hall of the Department of Education, Malacañang, Congress and the Supreme Court, were not domination enough. Or the enterprises of simony based on guilty contrition. But Gloria may soon discover the true meaning of contrition in legal conditions having to do with religious freedom under the US Congress' Millennium Challenge and other foreign aid programs. Bet you! Gloria will rue this awful decision on education.
Is Gloria genuine about training more Filipino genetic engineers and IT professionals? She said so in Zamboanga on June 12. But this BEC will only produce more GROs who devoutly go to Mass every Sunday. They will be driven by tricycle drivers who will never design GMOs (genetically modified organisms) because the pseudoscience superspreaders in media and academe unleash devastating propaganda against scientific careers every single chance they get. Radical ideology and religion are united in hating and sabotaging democracy and prosperity if it doesn't involve organized resentment or organized prayer.

There are also the UP students from the richest families in the country, comprising like 15% to 25% of the studentry, many of whom attended exclusive private schools, who can well afford to pay the full tuition.
Her record in population control and family planning program is appalling and is likely to have a disasterous effect on the economy in the long run. If she can't hold her ground against the Catholic church, then I think it is best that she resign na lang. Kasi kawawa naman ang taongbayan. Mas mabuti pa sina Senators Enrile, Joker Arroyo and Lacson, at si Pres. Ramos, at di natatakot sa mga bakla. At di naman sila ang presidente ngayon, ah...
While she is partly unpopular because of the new taxes, that is not the crux of it. After all, she has handled the economy very well. And the economy under Erap was not much better than now, but he remained loved then until now.
She is because she is so out of touch with the sentiments of the typical Filipino. The presence of US troops, the use of English as the medium of instruction in schools and now her kowtowing to the CBCP. These are VERY, VERY BIG issues to the Filipino. Much bigger than the financial one. Because it has to do with Filipino heritage, pride and tradition. Specially population management. I suspect that if she caves in to religion, it may just prove to be her undoing.
President-wannabes, specially if they come from the privileged class, ought to take a class on becoming a Filipino and go to UP for their undergrad so they have a feel of mainstream Filipino sentiments. And that religion thing is only loved in Forbes Park and private Catholic schools.
